Aviation was first created because men wanted to enter the new dimension of flight. It was quickly apparent through the golden years of barnstorming that aviation would change the face of civilization for one reason; transportation.
Aviators, like those who carried the US Mail in the early days, didn’t learn by buzzing around in a circuit at their local airport. They didn’t have air conditioning or heat. They didn’t have aluminum aircraft, GPS devices, leather seats, or XM weather. I mean, come on! They didn’t even have instruments for the most part!
These forefathers of aviation risked their lives for a leather gunny sack filled with paper envelopes. They did all they could to get it to it’s destination. Many lost their lives.
Those early years were dangerous, but there are many things we can learn.
Why are we wasting our time in the pattern? We have safe aircraft, a great system of charts, ATC, safety regulations, and navigational systems, like GPS avionics, that can get us safely to and fro. Plus, Flight Sim is our oyster. The entire world- that is any airport- is right at our fingertips in a few clicks.
Go somewhere. That’s what these aircraft were made to do. It’s not enough anymore to simply go up in the air, and stay in the pattern.
Anyone can learn to solo. Can you learn to Aviate?
